V. Sattui Winery

If you are looking for a great winery to picnic at, one of the best spots is V. Sattui Winery. First founded in 1885, V. Sattui is one of the most historic wineries in the area, but it also has one of the most expansive picnic grounds. It’s an excellent spot for a picnic, for both families and groups.

V. Sattui Winery has an on-site marketplace that offers an array of artisan food for your picnic, so you don’t even have to come prepared. They have sandwiches, salads, pastas, and other specialty items that are made fresh in their kitchen every day. They also make our own charcuterie to pair with over 200 different cheeses and fresh fruits.

Yountville Park

One of the most charming towns in Napa Valley is Yountville, and one of our favorite places to picnic is at Yountville Park. This park is perfect for laying out your blanket and enjoying your basket of treats. There are plenty of park benches and tables, lots of grass to spread out on, and a children’s play area. It’s clean and well landscaped with nice restroom facilities.

Make sure you take a blanket or a picnic tablecloth along with your picnic basket full of goodies. If you don’t come prepared, there is a taco truck parked nearby where you can grab some food to enjoy at the park.

Fuller Park

If you’re looking for a more family-friendly environment, away from the wineries, Fuller Park in the middle of Napa is a great place to go. There’s plenty of open spaces, grassy areas, and picnic tables. Plus, it’s not far from one of our favorite places to grab picnic supplies, Oxbow Public Market.

This park is small, but beautiful. It’s surrounded by huge redwoods. There are plenty of tables in the shade. There’s a play area for the kids and a walking path through the park. It’s also dog friendly. And, we’ve never had a problem finding parking.

Kennedy Park

Another really picturesque park for a picnic is Kennedy Park in Napa. It’s located right along the Napa River and it’s a great place to bring the family for a picnic. Along with lovely views of the water, there are plenty of picnic tables, a playground, bathrooms, and even a duck pond.

Rutherford Hill Winery

Nestled alongside Silverado Trail, the Oak Grove picnic area at Rutherford Hill Winery offers a stunning hilltop setting with sweeping views of Napa Valley. As a backdrop to your picnic, the lush vineyards of Rutherford Hill Winery create a tranquil atmosphere perfect for unwinding and savoring your picnic foods.

There is a really gorgeous view from some of the picnic tables. You can bring your own picnic, but there is a fee to reserve the picnic tables and you must buy their wine. I’d suggest getting a reservation in advance, as they get pretty busy on the weekends. It’s not exactly cheap to picnic here, but it can be worth it for the experience.

Pope Valley Winery

For a glimpse into “Old Napa,” visit the serene Pope Valley Winery located just past St. Helena. The historic 1887 winery showcases a rustic charm and a relaxed picnic setting, complete with a breathtaking vista of the Pope Valley region. The journey to this beautiful destination is an adventure in itself, promising a memorable experience for all who visit. The fee to use the picnic tables here is $20 per person, and you buy their wine, but you can bring your own food.

Building a Gourmet Picnic

For a truly gourmet picnic, start with a selection of artisan cheeses from local shops like Oakville Grocery and Fatted Calf. Pair them with a variety of charcuterie, focusing on bold and unique flavors that will complement the different wines you’ll taste.

Consider the following wine and food pairings to create an unforgettable gourmet picnic experience:

  • Sparkling wine: Combine with soft, creamy cheeses and fresh berries.
  • Sauvignon Blanc: Opt for goat cheese, tangy sauces, and citrus-based salads.
  • Chardonnay: Pair with smoked salmon, grilled vegetables, and chicken sandwiches.
  • Pinot Noir: Enjoy with prosciutto, dried fruits, and savory pastries.
  • Cabernet Sauvignon: Indulge in aged cheddar, dark chocolate, and tender steaks.

Packing Your Picnic Basket

When packing your gourmet picnic basket, the following items are essential:

  • Basket: Choose a sturdy picnic basket or backpack to easily carry your items.
  • Blanket: Bring a comfortable and durable blanket for your Napa Valley picnic.
  • Food: Pack a variety of charcuterie, artisan cheeses, and other gourmet accompaniments.
  • Utensils: Don’t forget knives for cheese, napkins, and a corkscrew to open wine bottles.
  • Ice packs: Keep perishable items like cheese and meats cool during your picnic.

Remember, when assembling your gourmet picnic, balance is key. Bring a variety of foods, wine, and accessories that cater to different palates and enhance your Napa Valley wine-tasting experience.
