We were really looking forward to a weekend away from home, so when we decided to fly out to California for a wine tasting weekend, we were happy to discover that there is a luxury hotel in San Jose that offers a special wine weekend getaway package. Hotel Valencia on Santana Row in Silicon Valley turned out to be the perfect location from which to discover the wineries of Santa Clara Valley and Los Gatos.

Santana Row is Silicon Valley’s premier shopping and dining destination. You can tell there’s something unique and special about this area as soon as you turn into the enclave that is Santana Row. High-end shopping and boutique specialty stores intermingle with trendy bars and restaurants where reservations are always needed. At 10pm on a Friday evening, there are dozens of people walking the streets, including groups having a fun night out.

Hotel Valencia fits right into the posh landscape. The valet was waiting happily at the curb to park our car. We grabbed our bags and entered the impressive archway that led to the hotel. It took us a few minutes to figure out how to actually enter the hotel. The elevator bays had no label or sign, but we could hear voices coming from above, so we got in the elevator and made our way to the lobby by following the voices.

The hotel is impressive in every aspect. The lobby is inviting and well designed. There are a couple of comfortable seating areas to wait for friends or just relax in. It only took a moment for us to get our room keys and find our way up to our room.

The wine weekend getaway package we booked included a one-night stay in a luxurious king room. Ours faced in to the courtyard and had a nice, large balcony with chairs and a table where we enjoyed the included bottle of wine and artisan cheese plate.

The room was quite luxurious and relaxing. The bed was super comfortable. It wasn’t until we opened the wooden balcony doors that I realized how glad I was for that smart feature. There were a lot of people – including many large groups – outside in the courtyard enjoying the nice evening, which of course produced a lot of noise. I was afraid that would be a problem for me, because I’m a very light sleeper, but once the thick wooden doors were shut, I couldn’t hear anything from the courtyard.

I did however, have to put in a complaint to the front desk about a pretty loud party that was going on next door to us. It was long after 10pm and the party was raging, so they said they’d send up security to take care of it, but it didn’t seem to die down for quite a while. The party next door, combined with the bass from the nightclub, Vbar, on the first floor, that continued until closing at 2am, made for a very noisy night. I drew the conclusion that Hotel Valencia might be better for groups of friends than for couples wanting to relax, but we were only there for a night. When we stay again, we’ll definitely ask for a room in a quieter area.

The hotel offers a free buffet breakfast in the morning at their restaurant, Citrus. You can eat inside or out in the courtyard. There was a good selection of meats, cheeses, cereal and bread. Citrus is also open for dinner and serves “globally influenced California cuisine”. When the weather is nice, there is also a rooftop bar called Cielo, that has great views of the Santa Cruz Mountains, and serves some light snacks.

If you’re looking for a modern and exceptional hotel in Silicon Valley, Hotel Valencia is definitely a top choice – especially if you’re with friends and want to stay where the action is. The location can’t be beat. Santana Row is a fun area to walk around, do some shopping and dining out.

Wine tasting at Testarossa Winery in Los Gatos

On Saturday, we checked out around 10:30am and collected our picnic basket and wine certificates to go do some exploring of the wine regions nearby. They had the basket all ready for us. It included sandwiches, chips, apples, water and cookies. Everything we needed for a great picnic. They even provided a blanket, though we didn’t take it with us because it happened to be raining that day. The food was all very good and spared us from having to find somewhere to eat for lunch.

If you would like to book the wine weekend getaway package, check out the details on their website. It’s a great deal! We used the wine certificates to visit four great wineries. So overall the package is a great value.

Hotel Valencia provided us with the wine weekend getaway package. A big thank you to them for hosting our visit. As always, all opinions are my own.

Looks like a great place to stay! I love Santana Row. There used to be a burger place there-unsure if its still there. It’s called The Counter and they have awesome customization burgers with every topping choice imaginable! YUM

It’s still there! We used to have one in Seattle, but it’s gone now. It was awesome to customize your burger however you wanted.

A wine tasting weekend is a luxury in itself. Looks like a lovely place for a weekend getaway. The wine and cheese at check-in was such a nice choice. Too bad about the noise, but otherwise it looked perfect!

  3. Kerri says:

Sounds great but I guess that noise would have definitely been a problem. It’s really had isn’t it when you can’t control who is residenced next to you in a hotel.

  4. Carly says:

Buffet breakfast and wine tastings, sounds like a perfect little weekend away! I’d have been annoyed by the partying as well.

    • Laura Lynch says:

Yeah, it’s unfortunate that hotels can’t always serve everyone at the same time. We could see that the groups here were having a really great time, it just wasn’t ideal for us as a couple.

Lovely way to spend the weekend indeed, I love wine tastings and wine tours. This can even be a great choice for me when I go to mountain view for work

The hotel looks quite nice and a wine tasting weekend is always great fun. Including the picnic basket is a great touch! You can spend your time enjoying the vineyards and not worry about getting off track searching for food.

And it was really convenient especially because there weren’t any restaurants out where we were. We would have had to leave the area and come back.

  7. Anda says:

California is perfect for wine tasting. I recently came back from a wine tasting FAM trip in Paso Robles. I wasn’t aware they have wineries in San Jose as well. This hotel look very nice and comfortable and that interior courtyard is very cozy.

    • Laura Lynch says:

Hi Anda. We’ve been wine tasting in Paso Robles too and love that area just as much. There are some really great wineries in California.
