Everyone has that one friend who reads horoscopes “just for fun” and then quietly plans half their year around them. I used to tease mine about it. Then I started noticing a pattern in the trips people raved about afterward. The restless ones came home glowing from somewhere wild and windy. The homebodies loved the places with soft beds and long lunches. Coincidence? Maybe. But it got me curious.
So a few years ago I tried it myself. An astrologer I found on https://www.asknebula.com/expert pulled up my birth chart and told me, pretty bluntly, that I needed to be near water. Two weeks later I was on a ferry to a Greek island with no hotel booked and no plan past lunch. It was the best week of that whole year. Your full chart says a lot more than your sun sign does, so a proper reading is worth it if you’re stuck on where to go. For a quick starting point, though, here’s where I’d send every sign, based on years of asking friends their birthdays before recommending anything.

Aries (March 21 – April 19): Patagonia
Aries people don’t really do relaxing. Put one on a beach lounger, and you’ll get maybe twenty minutes before they start asking about jet skis. So skip the beach and go to Patagonia. The wind down there is ridiculous (a friend of mine lost a hat on day one and her sunglasses on day two), and the classic Torres del Paine hike, up to the base of the three granite towers, means a 5 a.m. alarm.
Go between November and March, and book your park ticket and every campsite or refugio online before you fly, because rangers won’t let you start the W Trek without them. Your Aries will complain about the blisters at dinner. By dessert they’ll be googling Fitz Roy, the jagged peak just over the border in Argentina, for next year.
Taurus (April 20 – May 20): Tuscany
Taurus doesn’t ask for much. Decent bread. A mattress that swallows you whole. And please, nobody announcing at 10 a.m. that it’s time to get moving. So: Tuscany. Rent a farmhouse in the hills near Montepulciano, ideally one with a slightly broken shutter and an olive tree older than anyone’s grandparents, then wander into the Saturday market planning to buy a little cheese. You’ll leave with half a wheel of pecorino. Wine at lunch isn’t a scandal there, especially when the local red is Vino Nobile di Montepulciano.
Gemini (May 21 – June 20): Tokyo
My sister’s a Gemini. Last Friday she wanted Thai, then sushi, then “actually, just toast,” all before we’d found our shoes. Somewhere quiet would bore her stiff by Tuesday. Tokyo won’t. Walk ten minutes in any direction and the city’s turned into something else. She’d start the day at a kissaten, one of the city’s old-school coffee houses serving hand-dripped coffee and thick toast, burn half the afternoon digging through vintage racks in Shimokitazawa, and end up singing ABBA in a karaoke box at 1 a.m. with people she met an hour earlier. She’d still be telling those stories at Christmas.

Cancer (June 21 – July 22): Nova Scotia
Cancer loves home, so the trick is finding a place that already feels like one. Nova Scotia’s fishing towns manage that without even trying. My pick is Lunenburg. I drove down from Halifax once. Took about an hour, maybe more, because I kept pulling over. (It’s around 100 km, if you’re counting.) The whole old town has been on UNESCO’s World Heritage list since 1995, which I only learned later from a restaurant placemat. And the houses! Red, mustard yellow, and one purple one by the water that was definitely showing off.
Get a lobster roll and just accept that it’s going to drip down your wrist. By day two, whoever runs your inn will know how you take your coffee. Oh, and bring a sweater. A Cancer will want one even in August.
Leo (July 23 – August 22): The Amalfi Coast
Leos don’t go on holiday so much as make an appearance, and Positano is basically a theater set stacked up a cliff. Linen everything, dinner on a terrace hanging over the sea, a sunset photo that gets more likes than anything they’ve posted all year. Let them have it. A Leo friend of mine posted eleven photos from one dinner there, and annoyingly, every one of them was good.
One warning. Positano in July or August is a lot. You’ll inch up those stairs behind a tour group, sweating through all that linen, and the hotel bill will sting. June is nicer. September is nice too, and the sea’s still warm then.
Virgo (August 23 – September 22): Copenhagen
I have a Virgo friend who re-folds hotel towels. Copenhagen is the only city where I’ve ever seen her fully relax. Bikes get their own little traffic lights there, and people actually wait for them! A train running two minutes late earns the kind of look you’d normally save for someone cutting in line. Then lunch arrives. It’s smørrebrød, Denmark’s open-faced rye sandwich, and it’s so tidy you’d swear somebody assembled it with tweezers. Add an afternoon at Designmuseum Danmark, and a Virgo will start looking at apartments.

Libra (September 23 – October 22): Paris
Okay, I know. Paris is the obvious answer for Libra. I’m going with it anyway, because Libras love beauty and balance, and Paris has both on nearly every street. Do the Musée d’Orsay in the morning (any day but Monday, when it’s closed), have a lunch that somehow lasts until apéritif, then walk along the Seine and quietly judge everyone’s coats (they’re all nicer than yours). A Libra comes back from Paris looking about ten percent more put-together, and I’ve never figured out why.
Scorpio (October 23 – November 21): Iceland
Scorpio gets the moody one. I went to Iceland one December, and the sun came up around eleven, hung low for a bit, and then gave up before four. Weirdly, that was the best part? Black sand at Reynisfjara, a hot pool outside Flúðir with snow landing in my hair, and a whole night standing in a freezing field for an aurora that finally showed up at 2 a.m. Scorpios would love every cold minute of it. One serious note, though.
The waves at Reynisfjara are called sneaker waves for a reason, and more than one tourist has been dragged out by them. Look at the warning lights by the path before you head down. Then stay well back from the water, even if your Scorpio swears they’re fine.
Sagittarius (November 22 – December 21): Vietnam
Every friend group has one person who books the flight and figures out the rest at the airport. Usually, that’s the Sagittarius. Get them to Hanoi on a one-way ticket and don’t bother printing a plan, because they’ll lose it by lunch. They’ll catch the overnight train down to Hue (bumpy, loud, oddly wonderful), then talk someone into renting them a motorbike for the Hai Van Pass, the cliffside road between Hue and Da Nang.
Wear the helmet, Sag, and pack your motorbike license from home plus an International Driving Permit issued under the 1968 convention (most US permits are the 1949 kind, which Vietnam doesn’t accept), because insurers rarely cover unlicensed riders. A month or so later they wash up in Saigon with peeling shoulders and a new group chat, mostly Germans, plus one guy from Chile they now call their brother.

Capricorn (December 22 – January 19): Zermatt
Capricorns get twitchy on a holiday with no goal, so hand them a mountain. Zermatt has the Matterhorn, and it’s hard to miss. Not every hotel room has a view of the Matterhorn, so be sure to ask for one when you book. (You’ll take about four hundred photos of it anyway.) You can’t drive into town. Cars get left down the valley in Täsch, and a shuttle train covers the last 12 minutes.
If you’re there in summer or early fall (the path is usually open July to October), get up stupidly early and catch one of the first Gornergrat trains. Hop off at Rotenboden. About five minutes downhill sits the Riffelsee, a little lake that, when the air is dead still, hands you the whole Matterhorn again, upside down. Wait too long and the wind wrecks it. Afterwards? Fondue. A big one. Capricorns love a personal achievement.
Aquarius (January 20 – February 18): Berlin
Aquarius people have spent their whole lives being told they’re “a bit much,” so send them somewhere nobody’s keeping score. That’s Berlin. Sunday at the Mauerpark flea market, galleries tucked into old factories, clubs that open Saturday night and close… sometime Monday? Nobody’s going to look twice at an Aquarius there, which is the point.
Pisces (February 19 – March 20): The Greek Islands
Remember that ferry? Yep, I’m a Pisces. Of course the stars sent me to sea. Give us a boat and a coastline, and we’re fine. Skip Santorini. Pretty? Sure. But at sunset, half of Oia are phones held up over other people’s heads. I’d go to Folegandros instead, a small Cycladic island with no airport (the ferry from Piraeus takes about five to nine hours), one main village, a bus that comes when it comes, and a taverna up the hill where I never once saw a menu. You ate whatever the owner’s mom had cooked that morning. Book the hotel first, though. Learn from me.
Before You Book
Look, astrology won’t book your flights. (I wouldn’t trust it with my passport either.) But it’s a surprisingly useful way to figure out what you actually want from a week off. Maybe that’s a glacier. Maybe you just want to sleep somewhere near the water and not check your email for a while. Either is fine! Pick whichever sign feels right and go.
